Dairy & Health

WHY DAIRY MILK IS NOT MEANT FOR HUMANS:

Out of all the mammalian species, only humans continue milk consumption after the weaning period  [the period of breast-feeding].

Cow’s milk is not designed for human consumption– it is meant for calves!  It contains on average about three times the amount of protein than human milk does, which causes a multitude of health issues to the human body.  The only animal that thrives on cow’s milk is a calf!

Milk and dairy products are not necessary in the diet and can be harmful to health. Dairy products—including cheese, ice cream, milk, butter, and yogurt—contribute significant amounts of cholesterol and saturated fat to the diet. In fact, cheese is the single largest source of saturated fat in the American diet.

Milk and dairy products are pro-inflammatory and mucus producing. Milk increases the risks of respiratory conditions and allergies. It has been linked to the development of arthritis due to joints becoming inflamed.

AND, THERE’S MORE…

* A glass of milk  contains pus cells, feces components, bovine growth hormones, antibiotics, and a high level of unnecessary fat, cholesterol and calories — all of which create a terrible imbalance in the body and can lead to many illnesses.

* Disease: Milk proteins, milk sugar, fat, and saturated fat in dairy products encourage the development of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

* Prostate and Ovarian Cancer:  Evidence suggests that the consumption of milk and other dairy products leads to an increased risk of prostate and ovarian cancer. Drinking more than one glass of milk per day may double your risk of ovarian cancer, while a Harvard study found men who consumed more than two daily dairy servings had a 34% increased risk of developing prostate cancer, compared with those who consumed little or no dairy. Conversely, dairy-free diets may slow the progress of these cancers.

* Acne: Multiple studies have linked all types of cow’s milk to an increased prevalence of acne in both boys and girls.  Milk contains whey protein, hormones, and sugars which increase skin breakouts.

But Don’t I Need Cow’s Milk to Get Calcium?

America has one of the highest consumption rates of dairy, yet one of the highest rates of osteoporosis.

Despite the calcium that dairy contains, its high protein content can cause osteoporosis.

The reason is that when protein is digested, it increases the acidity of the blood. The body then pulls calcium from the blood to neutralize the acid.

When this excess calcium is excreted the kidneys bear the load, which in turn contributes to the formation of kidney stones.  Kidney stones have a calcium composition.

Why do this to your body when you can get all the calcium you need from plants, and absorb it better, too!  (see the sidebar for list of plant-based sources).

So many delicious plant-based milks to choose from-- most fortified with calcium!

CHEESE…HARD TO GIVE UP?

When it comes to addictive foods, pizza, not surprisingly, comes out on top of the most addictive food list. There’s a scientific reason we all love pizza, and it has to do with the cheese.

Cheese happens to be especially addictive because of an ingredient called casein, a protein found in all milk products. During digestion, casein releases opiates called casomorphins.  These casomorphins attach to the same brain receptors as heroin and other narcotics, creating an opioid effect.

These concentrated dairy products, like cheese, have especially high levels of opiates, like morphine.

WHEN YOU TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE FACT THAT WE DON’T NEED MILK TO GET CALCIUM, LESSENING YOUR DAIRY CONSUMPTION CAN SEEM MUCH EASIER!

There is an abundance of plant-based cheeses on the market that are creamy and delicious-- Myoko's is one excellent brand.
